Academic Certification in GS1 (Global Barcode Standard)
On 20 & 22 September 2019, Mr. Terry Papadis, Lead Trainer and Manager (Education and training) GS1 Australia, visited fourth time to speak to the PGD-SCM Participants. This GS1 Academic Certification was a synergistic workshop that provided exposure of SCM's technology layer by the utilization of the GS1 principles. GS1 workshop is a part of Supply Chain Modelling & Simulation course. It included role-play, and simulation of normal business that require pragmatic solutions for the effective implementation of GS1 standards. Participants praised equally the speaker's business and GS1 acumen. Towards the end, participants also exhibited different business cases of GS1 implementation plans, which upgraded their intellectual levels and boosted flexibility and critical thinking.
1-Day @ PIFFA's Secretariat
On 21 July, 2019 PGD-SCM participants visited PIFFA's (Pakistan International Freight Forwarders Association) Training Institute for a one day workshop on "Freight Forwarding" as a part of the course of "Globalization & Import-Export Policy" (GIMPEX). Mr. Ahsan Ulhaq Siddiqui (Principal, PIFFA), Mr. Abdul Wahab Butt, and Mr. Naseer were the faculty members from PIFFA Training Institute, who talked about: Bulk, containerized, Break-Bulk Cargo, Multi-Modal Logistics and Freight Management, Liner & Chartered Shipping, Liner Agent Relationship Management, Baltic Exchange, Logistics Documentation, Import-Export Documentation, TIR Carnet, Insurance & General Averaging principles, Custom clearance cases and WEBOC system. Dr. Rameez Khalid witnessed the session on behalf of IBA Karachi. Participants took active participation in this one-day session as it heavily enhanced participants' knowledge of contemporary issues in freight forwarding. Participants appreciated the efforts of the faculty members of PIFFA.
Industrial Visit to DP World
On July 13, 2019 PGD-SCM participants along with faculty and course instructor Mr. Hanif Ajari visited renowned organisation "DP World's Qasim International Container Terminal". The primary purpose of the visit was to minimize the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of different logistics' concepts. The visit further developed association between academia and industry. During visit, participants were briefed by Mr. Yousuf, Deputy Manager Operations, about handling, storage, loading and unloading of containers to and from merchant ships. It was informed that DP World, after its commencement in 1997, is playing a vital role in the economy by contributing 35% of the shipments' market share among the four ports of the country. DP World has five berths for loading/off loading with depth of 13m. Newly constructed control room is going to become a source of revolution in its operations. The participants thoroughly appreciated the visit for its learning and exposure.
Industrial Visit to Agility
Participants of PGD-SCM visited "Agility's Warehouse: Qasim Logistics Center - 1 at Port Qasim" in the course of "Logistics: Transportation and Warehousing". This visit happened on July 13, 2019 and Mr. Hanif Ajari, course instructor, got it arranged. Participants were welcomed by the staff of Agility, and Mr. Moin Malik, CEO Agility Pakistan. He chatted with the participants on the business processes, customers, Agility's large network, operations, merger and acquisition plans, and adoption of SAP. Participants witnessed various operations performed at the warehouse with Agility's technical team. Agility's warehouse has total capacity of 22,000 normal-temperature and 700 cold-storage pallet-spots. Students and faculty spent quality time with Agility officials and learnt new supply chain management techniques. The trip ended with lunch with CEO and Agility's team.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Muhammad Fahad, Supply Chain Expert & SAP Professional, Siemens, having more than 10 years, visited PGD-SCM program as a Guest Speaker on: Enterprise Resource Planning. He discussed various facets of ERP deployment & its underutilised status in Pakistan. This session was held on July 13, 2019. PGD-SCM participants took keen interest in the session. Mr. Fahad shared his experience with participants for maintaining effective record system, defining organisation process flow and avoiding repetitive task to optimise process flow via ERP. He shared his valuable insights about future jobs and skill-set required for Supply Chain Professionals. The session ended by conferring memento to the honorable Guest.
Bullwhip - Simulation Game
On April 07, 2019, a whole day simulation session witnessing Bullwhip Effect was conducted by Dr. Rameez Khalid – Academic Director PGD-SCM. Mr. Faisal Jalal, visiting faculty, was invited to evaluate the session as a SCM Specialist. Participants were segregated into two supply chains and each supply chain represented five stages: Retailer, Wholesaler, Manufacturer, Distributor and Supplier. The non-collaborative scenario was played where each stage of the supply chains has to forecast demand of their next stage. The supply chains were producing Laptops, one team was Dell, while other was representing HP. Participants got thoroughly engaged in the activity as they witnessed week by week lead times, order forecasts, laptop deliveries, stock-outs and excess-stocks. The simulation was played in the course of "Supply Chain Management". It was one of its type and provided experiential learning in managing supply chains and coming out of the silo mentality of local-optimization. PGD-SCM Program office at IBA Karachi is planning to design more simulations to enhance experiential learning avenues in the program. Mr. Kundan (PGD-SCM Coordinator) and Mr. Arham (Teaching Assistant) were pivotal in the planning and smooth arrangement of this event. The event finished with a feedback session with the PGD-SCM Participants who praised the witnessing of: bullwhip effect and importance of collaboration /integration in SCM.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Salman Wasti, having 20+ years experience as a Procurement Professional in Canada, France, Germany and Middle East, talked to PGD-SCM Participants on March 10, 2019 on "Reverse-Auction". He delivered the session live from Canada in the course of "Strategic Sourcing and Negotiation Skills". The guest shared his extensive experience of carrying out reverse-auction via ARIBA platform (SAP). He discussed various important facets of the topic, such as: getting more bidders in the bidding process; strengthening the sourcing process of bottle-nec, non-critical and leverage items; several bidding options, and; the Pre – Qualification of suppliers. He also discussed the importance of buyer's role as enabler in educating, coordinating, ensuring, monitoring and supporting vendors by proper planning and documentation for reverse-auction. The session became more interesting when the speaker showed recorded reverse-auction's session videos. This talk made PGD-SCM participants aware of the emerging sourcing trends to push the current procurement regime to the next level in Pakistan. The session was highly interactive as participants pose various related questions and the speaker gave a timely response. Participants appreciated speaker's style, valuable knowledge and experience. The session was closed by remarks of gratitude from the faculty member: Mr. Adnan Ahmed.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Yasin Rizvi, COO of Hascol, spoke to PGD-SCM participants on January 20, 2019 on "Lubricants' Supply Chains - Global Challenges & Solutions". This guest speaker session was arranged in the course of "Supply Chain Management". He shared his corporate experience (Hascol, Total Oils Pakistan Ltd, and Chevron-Caltex, to name a few) about the importance of: SCM for lubricants, Base oil & its classifications, Additives & its types, Performance specifications and Global Lubricants' demand. Respected speaker shared his multi-cultural & operational experience with participants being a veteran of the Lubricant industry. Participants applauded his meaningful experience. He also talked about the impact of supply chain on Pakistan's Base oil market & solutions like Intra-functional, Inter-functional & Inter-organizational Integration for pushing the local industry. The session was concluded by bestowing souvenir to the venerable guest by Dr. Izhar Hussain, Director CEE, with a lot of recognition by participants.
Guest Speaker Session
President SCAP and Aaramshop and also BoD Al-Shaheer and GS1, Consultant and a renowned Speaker/Trainer, Mr. Qaysar Alam, having a work experience of more than 30 years at Unilever Pakistan, visited PGD-SCM program as a Guest Speaker on: "Supply chain Relationship Management (Collaborating & Winning together) in Pakistan". This event was organized by PGD-SCM office, CEE-IBA-Karachi on Dec 2, 2018. The lecture was attended by PGD-SCM & PM participants in which all students took keen interest. Mr.Qaysar Alam shared his deep knowledge and experience with participants for developing long-term relationships with suppliers. He specifically talked about the tactical buying, strategic buying, SRM methodology, sourcing strategy, negotiation and configuring supply. He further discussed collaboration challenges like lack of infrastructure and trade partners restriction to B2B. He also gave solutions for moving forward despite such challenges by building trust by information sharing, working with suppliers on improvement projects and sharing KPIs. The session ended by conferring memento to the honorable Guest with great appreciation by audience.
2-Days @ PIFFA
PGD-SCM Participants visited PIFFA (Pakistan International Freight Forwarders Association) Training Institute, Karachi, on July 14 & 15, 2018, for a 2-Days Training Workshop on "Transport Industry Practices". Mr. Ahsan Ulhaq Siddiqui (Principal, PIFFA), Mr. M. Arif Qadeer, Mr. Abdul Wahab Butt, Mr. Riaz Iqbal and Mr. Ghazanfar Ai Khan were the facilitators. Multi-modal Logistics, Freight Management, Principal and Agency Relationship, Containerized and Bulk Cargo, and Import-Export Documentation were the major topics. Especial focus were on the real-time cases, that enhanced the participants' technical knowledge. This interaction was part of the course: "Globalization and Import-Export Policy" (GIMPEX). This footfall in the PIFFA Secretariat has ameliorated the confidence of the participants about working with Freight Forwarders and Customs; even some are thinking about starting their own businesses in this area. Participants heavily appreciated PIFFA's faculty, this initiative and suggested for exploring more avenues of similar collaborations.
Import-Export Simulation Game
On 8th July 2018, a full day Simulation session on Import-Export Procedure was held under the supervision of Mr. Faisal Jalal – CEO, Sinofeng Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. And Dr. Rameez Khalid – Academic Director PGD-SCM. Mr. Nabeel Sher, who has extensive experience of rice export, was also invited to join as an expert. Participants got rigorously involved in the activity, both learning and enjoying at the same time. Participants were divided into eight teams; four representing Pakistan and other four China. The four teams were: Exporter, Importer, Bank, and Freight Forwarder. This simulation has been introduced within the "Globalization and Import-Export" (GIMPEX) course of PGD-SCM. It was one of its kind in providing real-time experience during Import-Export practice. PGD-SCM Program Office is doing its utmost in introducing more simulations and engaging activities in other courses of supply chain management. Simulations are proven techniques that enhance the learning exponentially, especially in andragogy. Instructors gave inputs and suggested corrections in real time. On December 16, 2017, the Center of Executive Education (CEE), IBA, Karachi commemorated its Second Annual Convocation for its Post Graduate Diploma Programs. The audience for this ceremony included: successful PGD Participants with families, Faculty Members, other students. Distinguished personalities include: Dr. Abdul Bari, Chief Guest, Founder and CEO of Indus Hospital; Syed Muhammad Shabbar Zaidi, Guest of Honor, Territory Senior Partner and Chairman of A.C Ferguson; Dr. Farrukh Iqbal, Dean and Director of IBA, and; Dr. Izhar Hussain, Director of CEE.
Diplomas were conferred, and honorable guests presented Medals and Shields to the high achievers to celebrate outstanding excellence in their discipline. Dr. Izhar Hussain, who treasured the courage of the graduating participants, said: "We have tried to make this diploma as good as possible, it is now your duty to use the knowledge learnt here in your practical field."
"Technology Layer in Managing Supply Chains"
A session on the above title was conducted on 10th December 2017 by Mr. M. Rizwan Buttar -Chief Innovation Officer of Zauq Group. He exposed the PGD-SCM participants with digitization, Industry 4.0 and digital supply chain management, Cloud-based systems, analytics and monitoring of goods, vehicles and other assets via the Internet of Things (IoT). He said these concepts are improving the way supply chains are managed. Especial focus of his talk was on: Item Level Traceability for Pharmaceutical and FMCG Industry. He also deliberated how technologies like predictive analytics, better visibility over the movement of goods and robotics are helping warehouses and distributions centers (DCs) keep pace with the changing global needs. As these new technologies are often layered over existing systems, therefore, he emphasized on building strong trading partner communication. Dr. Najam Akbar, Faculty Member, Dept. of Management, presented a souvenir to the guest.
Transportation Realities in Pakistan
On 10th December 2017, Mr. Khurram H. Hidayatallah, GM, APT Showfreight Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. talked to PGD-SCM Participants about his views, in the light of his extensive experience, on the Transportation Sector of Pakistan. He shared various practical challenges of this sector and offered solutions that worked. The discussion went from many operational level details (e.g. terminology and information related to trailers and carriage contracts etc.) to new developments (e.g. Pakistan being signatory of TIR Carnet etc.). Dr. Najam Akbar, Faculty Member, Dept. of Management, presented a souvenir to the guest.

It was based on role-play, and simulation of typical business scenarios that require practical and realistic solutions for the effective implementation of GS1 standards in organizations. At the end of this course, participants also presented different cases which enhanced their cognitive levels and boosted their adaptability and business thinking.
Seminar on GS1 Global Barcode
On 13th September 2017, IBA CEE hosted a seminar at IBA, City Campus with Ms. Ulrike Kreysa, Vice-President Healthcare, GS1 Global Office, Brussels. This session was arranged to emphasize the effective management of the Healthcare Supply Chains using technology. Ms. Ulrike Kreysa is responsible for the Healthcare sector at the GS1 Global Office in Brussels and works with her local colleagues in 112 countries across the world to develop and implement GS1 standards in the healthcare industry. The seminar participants were exposed to pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers and distributors, group purchasing organizations, logistics providers, governmental and regulatory bodies, and trade associations. She emphasized how the use of technology in the healthcare supply chains is ameliorating patient safety, supply chain security and service delivery efficiency, traceability and accurate data synchronization. The lecture was attended by PGD-SCM participants and guests from leading pharma companies and hospitals
Witness™ Software Simulation Workshop
A 4-day long Workshop was held on 7th-10th September 2017 for hands-on familiarization with Witness Software. IBA hosted Dr. M. Latif from Manchester Metropolitan University, an expert on Supply Chain Simulations. By simulating internal and then external supply chains, the PGD-SCM participants and MBA Students visualized various complex relationships to identify improvement opportunities using Witness™ Software. At the end of the workshop, participants found themselves capable of: modeling and simulating simple supply chains, and; more importantly critically analyzing an already developed complex models.
Guest Speaker Session
A Guest Speaker Session about Production Management was held on 15th April, 2017 for PGD-SCM participants in the course of "Operations & Production Management". The session was conducted by the Deputy Manager Production Planning - Export, Mr. Abdul Salam Khan, from National Foods Pvt. Ltd. It was an operational level discussion that provided the hand-holding in the whole production process from demand forecasts to Master Production Scheduling (MPS) and then Material Requirements Planning (MRP) to Production and from Packaging to Export. He provided the insights of how these things work at National Foods. Lastly, IBA CEE bestowed him with the Memento of appreciation for his valuable contribution in explaining the area of operation and production management at corporate level.
On 2nd of April 2017 a physical SCM Simulation Session was conducted by one of the highly experienced faculty of IBA, Mr. Ameer Rizvi – who possess more than 10 years of experience in business consulting, process analysis and business model. The simulation session was 9 hours long consisting of thought-provoking activities around understanding the "Bull-whip Effect" specifically and "Supply Chain Issues" generally. Building strong team-work was another learning outcome of this session. Participants tracked the lead times, stock-out and over-stock costs of each stage from consumer to supplier; they further forecasted the demand in non-collaborative mode in real-time scenario. This simulation session facilitated the participants to relight the understanding of market and industrial setting, and their bottlenecks. PGD-SCM program promised its participants to introduce more stimulating and motivating sessions of these kinds in near future.
Guest Speaker Session
Procurement in the public-sector demands vigilance so that value for money be delivered while spending tax-payers' hard-earned money. Considering the importance, a seminar on Public-Sector Procurements was arranged in the course of "Strategic Sourcing & Negotiation Skills" for the PGD-SCM participants on Friday, 31st of March 2017.
For this program, Mr. Ali Imam Qadri was invited who is one of the most senior Public Procurement Specialists in the country and founder member of Sindh Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (SPPRA). He has a Masters' Degree in Public Procurement from University of Turin, Italy, and; obtained 'Train the Trainer' certification from IBA Karachi, LUMS and Civil Service Academy of Singapore. He shared his diversified experience of more than 26 years, especially about his: involvement in various types of procurements, contract management, and; working as a team lead and procurement consultant in national /international organizations including the World Bank, RSPN (USAID funded), Technical Resource Facility (DFID and AusAID funded), Health Departments (of three Sindh, Baluchistan and KPK), Education, Finance and Planning & Development Departments of Sindh. Participants appreciated his presence and expertise as in response to their queries, Mr. Qadri frequently pondered upon his experience of: drafting Sindh Public Procurement Rules 2010; preparing guidelines for purchase of drugs and medicines; developing standard bidding documents for procurement of goods, and; consulting services on preparing procurement manuals for various programs.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Khawar Kamran, CEO of a 3PL venture 'Kinetic Business Solution', spoke to PGD-SCM participants on March 5th, 2017 in the course of "Supply Chain Management". He is a CSCP and has worked extensively in different supply chain capacities in various countries (including British Gas UK, Ceva Logistics Dubai, Singapore & Malaysia, DHL Global Forwarding, Abu Dhabi and e2e Logistics, Pakistan). The topic of his speech was "Distribution & Fleet Management" which was very well taken by the participants as he shared his multi-cultural and operational experience being a veteran of the logistics industry. Participants appreciated his various examples relevant to operational challenges in managing fleet, 3PL and 4PL, especially during: distributing Laptops in Punjab under Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme, and; transporting Metro Buses from Karachi Port to Lahore and Islamabad.

Mr. Farhan Pasha, GM Procurement PSO, visited again IBA on 3rd December, 2016 as a guest speaker. Mr. Pasha has over 20 years of extensive experience in the Supply Management of Oil & Gas Sector. He addressed the PGD Supply Chain Management class in the course of "Managing Contracts & Supplier Relationships". He shares the ground realities of supplier relationships, strategic sourcing and challenges in the procurements of a public-sector company in the oil & gas sector of Pakistan.
ISO 28000-2007 Certification
IBA's PGD-SCM Program sought collaboration of Lloyd's Register in delivering a IRCA certified training on ISO 28000-2007. This standard is known as the "Supply Chain Security Management System". The lead trainer and experienced assessor Mr. Raheel Ehsan of Lloyd's Register visited the PGD-SCM program of CEE, IBA Karachi and delivered this certification workshop in December 2016. In these sessions, he made the participants brain storm for the risks around supply chains of various products and services. This workshop helped participants to comprehend the field of Auditing by going through the basics and then applying on various scenarios. The workshop finished with an exam for the ISO-2800:2007 Certification.
Writing & Referencing Session
The Head of IBA's Cowasjee Writing Centre, Ms. Maria Hassan spoke to PGD-SCM participants on 30th December, 2016. She instructed the PGD-SCM participants on how to write professional Project Reports and amplify their familiarization with protocols. She articulated about the application of writing as a skill and pointed out the structure, citation of published authors, rules of punctuation, grammar and style, common alignment and signposting in writing a Formal Project Report which lead to professionalism. Individual queries were handled as well and participants took keen interest to fill their gaps in writing formal and impactful reports.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Kashif Rahim Safety & Environment Manager of Indus Motor Company delivered a Guest Speaker Session on 29thOctober, 2016. The session was about 5S Simulation which he led with hands-on activities. He explained the participants all the aspects of 5S Activity at IMC, 5S mechanism in Indus Motors, 5S Plan, Management Board, Check sheet, Observation Ranking criteria and many more. He also rekindled the skills of participants to execute 5S both at the higher and operational level.The session ended with boundless exposure to this very important methodology of Lean and TQM for the participants.
3rd Advisory Committee Meeting
For achieving the objectives of the PGD-SCM Program and giving fresh direction, the third Advisory Committee Meeting was called on October 2nd, 2016. The discussion panel consisted of high profile supply chain specialists both from industry and academia. A healthy debate took place around: Administration policies of the Program; PGD-SCM Capstone Project Handbook and selected TORs; and Course Contents. Furthermore, faculty members' experiences and participants' feedback was also discussed to maintain the quality of this program. President SCAP & Aaramshop, BoD Al-Shaheer & GS1, and the President Supply Chain Association of Pakistan (SCAP), Consultant and a renowned Speaker/Trainer, Mr. Qaysar Alam, having a work experience of 29 years at Unilever Pakistan, conducted a Guest Speaker session on: "Challenges & Solutions in Managing FMCG Supply Chains in Pakistan". This event was organized by PGD-SCM Program Office, CEE-IBA-Karachi on 23rd September, 2016. More than 100 individuals from various renowned companies at various levels such as: Directors, CEOs, HoDs and Managers showed interest and attended this session. PGD-SCM Students were present at this important event. M. Qaysar Alam shared his immense knowledge & experience in achieving efficiencies in speed, service and cost. He acutely discussed about the Globalization of manufacturing operation, safety and quality of the product, supplier base consolidation, access to the latest technologies, improvement of productivity, profit maximization by smartly reducing the supply chain cost, managing demand volatility and protocol of S&OP. He molded the perspective and understanding of managing the FMCG Supply Chains under current challenges, he also laid a deep intuition to their solutions. This session expanded the horizon of each participant and constructed a sound ground to understand the future needs of Supply Chain in Pakistan. The session concluded by bestowing the memento to the Honorable Guest and with the vote of appreciations from the audience.

As last fall, the lead trainer Mr. Terry Papadis, Manager (Education and training) GS1 Australia, again visited the PGD-SCM program of CEE, IBA Karachi for 3-days (2-4 Sept. 2016) for delivering a workshop on GS1 for PGD-SCM Participants, the most widely used supply chain standard in the world, where he discussed about barcodes and RFIDs, and their applicability in managing supply chains.
GS1 Standard, a best practice of supply chain management (SCM), enables businesses to achieve excellence in SCM, product traceability and operational effectiveness & efficiency using Barcodes, RFIDs and EDI etc. This workshop helped participants to comprehend the complex correlation of GS1 and Integration, as it guarantees that barcodes and unique numbers can be acknowledged at local and international level as well as by the major retailers and distributors.

On June 3rd, 2016 PGD SCM participants took a study trip to "Lucky Cement Ltd's plant at Nooriabad". The participants witnessed the complete end to end process, i.e. production of cement from Mining of Limestone to final Packaging. The trip also included anat-site session on the existing SCM flows and future global and local expansion plans of Lucky Cement. Mr. Yaseen Ahmed Meenai (IBA's faculty member) and Mr. Kamran Aftab (of PGD-SCM Program Office)accompanied the participants on the trip. The trip was concluded by the visitors' presentation of bouquets to the hosts.
On June 13th, 2016 PGD SCM participants met at Army Log Area, Officers' Mess, Shahrah-e-Faisal Karachi for Iftar Dinner. The participants had a spiritual gathering and spent quality time together. Faculty members and Manager Program-Office of PGD-SCM also attended the event. The event ended with the gratitude offered by the participants to their host.

A guest speaker session was conducted by Mr. Iqbal Sheikh, Sr. Manager Supply Chain (HoD) at PNSC., on July 17th, 2016 as a part of the course "Globalization & Import-Export Policy". In this session, he highlighted various factors which brought a turn around in the performance of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). This session broadened the horizon of PGD-SCM participants about the impact of local context, international trade, Government initiatives regarding Pakistan Merchant Navry and PNSC Fleet, on specifically the national shipping industry and generally the whole shipping business.

Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Irshad Alam, Factory Manager, Colgate-Palmolive, joined the class as a guest speaker on March 27th, 2016 in the course of "Operations & Production Management". The topic of his session was 'Challenges in Forecasting and Inventory Management of FMCG'. He shared his vast experience of managing the FMCG supply chains. He highlighted the standard practices of the industry especially the forecasting. The session was highly interactive and full of examples from the FMCG sector e.g. Unilever, Shan, Tapal, Tang and Tetley etc., as the participants took part in the conversation with Mr. Irshad Alam.
Guest Speaker Session
A guest speaker session was conducted by Mr. Zeeshan Ganatra, Sr. Manager Supply Chain (HoD) at Shangrila (Pvt.) Ltd.,on March 12th, 2016 as a part of the course "Accounting and Finance for Supply Chain Managers". The title of his discussion was financial supply chain management. In this session, participants of PGD (SCM) conceded deeper insights of financial impacts, SCOR, KPI's and risk mitigation while managing supply chains. The session completed by a vote of thanks from PGD-SCM participants and Mr. Abdul Rahim Suriya.
Fall Semester 2015
GS1 Standard, a best practice of supply chain management (SCM), enables businesses to achieve excellence in SCM, product traceability and operational effectiveness & efficiency using Barcodes, RFIDs and EDI etc. A MoU was signed between GS1-Pakistan (Mr. Saifuddin Bandukwala, President GS1-Pakistan) and IBA Karachi (Dr. Izhar Hussain, Director CEE) for training and allied purposes. Mr. M. Qaysar Alam, ex-Head Supply Chain Unilever and Director SCAP and President Aramshop, was also present.
GS1 Academic Certification
The lead trainer, Mr. Terry Papadis, Manager (Education and Training) GS1 Australia, held 3-day (4-6 Sep, 2015) training on GS1, the most widely used supply chain standards system in the world, in which he discussed about barcodes and their applicability in supply chain. PGD-SCM Participants took their online-exam and successful participants will receive an academic certification from GS1. Dr. Shahid Mir and Mr. Ameer Rizvi attended the sessions as well.
Witness Software Workshop
On 8th September 2015, IBA hosted Dr. M. Latif from Manchester Metropolitan University, an expert on Supply Chain Simulations. He delivered an Industrial Taster Session and then a 4-Day workshop for PGD-SCM Participants. Dr. Latif, using "Witness" software, simulated the performance of an internal and then external supply chain so that complex relationships can be understood and opportunities for improvement can be found. IBA has acquired 30 licenses for 'Witness' as well and will be offering customized workshops soon.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. S. Sami H. Zaidi, Director Manufacturing & Supply Chain, Colgate-Palmolive (Pakistan) Ltd., talked to PGD-SCM participants on November 22nd, 2015 on the topic of "Logistics". He shared his vast experience of managing FMCG supply chains and especially drawn on to interesting personalized examples relevant to transportation and warehousing (distribution and logistics).
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Amin Ganny, Chief Operating Officer, Lucky Cement Ltd., dropped in PGD-SCM as a guest speaker on November 15th, 2015. He discussed the "Supply Chain Dynamics of the Cement Industry". He initiated the session with an introduction of Lucky Cement and then opened the discussion towards local and global cement industry. PGD-SCM participants asked various questions regarding the sourcing and transportation of raw materials, coal and finished goods. Especial emphasis was on the import of raw materials and export of cement from Pakistan.
"The Cool Connection" – Financial Supply Chain Simulation
Presently, the program office is in the process of collaboration with Inchainge which organized a Global Student Challenge for Financial Supply Chain Simulation: 'The Cool Connection'. In Spring-2015, four of our BBA students participated in this competition in Netherlands under the mentorship of Dr. Rameez Khalid. They were able to bag 4th position. The IBA family is proud of you, Gentlemen!
Inchainge has offered this simulation again and the same team went to Las Vegas, USA to represent IBA. By this manifestation, Inchainge has offered free licenses to IBA. Instructors were trained to deliver sessions using this simulation. PGD-SCM participants played this simulation in October-November 2015 after Inchainge provided 35 licenses.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Islamuddin Zafar, General Manager Administration, Indus Motor Company, talked to PGD-SCM participants on November 28th, 2015 as part of the "Quality Management" course. He started the session by associating QM terms with everyday life, thus cementing them into minds. He then took the class through an introductory session on Lean Management and the Toyota Production System.
Guest Speaker Session
Mr. Farhan Pasha, Procurement Manager, United Energy Pakistan Ltd, joined the class as a guest speaker on November 14th, 2015 in the course of "Managing Contracts & Supplier Relationships". He shared his experiences of contracting in E&P sector. He highlighted the best practices and especially focused on how contracts can be used to enhance supplier relationships in the upstream of oil and gas supply chain. He also shared his views on the energy sector of Pakistan.
Summer Semester 2015
On 22nd May 2015, our PGD-SCM participants, along with Dr. Rameez Khalid, Mr. Irshad Alam and Mr. Kamran Bilgrami, visited two warehouses of e2e in Korangi Industrial Area where an interactive session was conducted by Mr. Khawar Kamran (COO, e2e). He briefed the participants about the supply chain processes and challenges to his industry's operations in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Middle East. He further discussed, how through these years e2e has managed to live up to what its name depicts, i.e. end-to-end solutions.
Guest Speaker Session
On 2nd August 2015, Mr. Ali Asghar (from S. M. Asghar Pvt. Ltd., a Customs Clearing Agent) delivered a talk on "Custom Clearance Procedures". His session was lively and full of interactive discussions with PGD-SCM participants. He discussed at length the role of various stakeholders in custom clearance, i.e. of: Customs (facilitating trade, collecting taxes and implementing the trade policy of the country); Shipping line (the custodian of the container); Port Authority (receives container from shipping line and once it is cleared from custom, it is given to transport). He then presented in detail the WEBOC system of PRAL after logging into the system. The intricacies of the Clearing Agent business also came under discussion. He ended the session with a discussion on various relevant and required documents /standards in this business: BL, FTA Certificate, Custom's Verification Hierarchy, GD, and IGM (Import General Manifest).

Guest Speaker Session
A guest speaker session was conducted by Mr. Hanif Ajari (Advisor Supply Chain, Getz Pharma) in Feb 2015 as a part of the course "Accounting and Finance for Supply Chain Managers". The title of his discussion was financial supply chain management where he discussed inventory and warehousing as well as financial implications of various supply chain decisions. He concluded it with a global perspective of financial contribution of a well-positioned and well-managed supply chain.
Mr. Eram Hasan (Head Supply Chain, K-Electric) dropped in as an observer in one of the sessions of the course "Strategic Sourcing and Negotiation Skills" in March 2015. He shared valuable strategic insights about sourcing and spend analysis.
On April 4, 2015 PGD SCM & HRM students took a study trip to Al Shaheer Corporation (Meat One) Warehouse at Gadap. Mr. Adnan Ahmed, Chief Operation Officer, Al Shaheer Corporation hosted the trip. The students were first taken to the cattle reserves, followed by the tour to live cattle cutting and the chilling area. The trip was followed by a session by Mr. Adnan Ahmed on the existing SCM & HRM flows followed by Al Shaheer Corporation and its future global and local expansion plans. Dr. Rameez Khalid, Mr. Ameer Rizvi & Mr. Faisal Jalal were among the faculty members who attended the trip. The trip was concluded with the State-of-the Art lab visit followed by refreshments for the visitors.
